Singapore SGX : STI Daily Technical Outlook 07 Aug


Market Review for STI:
Share prices opened lower with the Straits Times Index down 6.27 points to 3,316.35. South Korean stocks eased and the won was little changed on Thursday as most investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of key central bank policy meetings in the European Union, UK and Japan. The close for the day was observed at 3314.22, formed a red doji for the day.

Important Factor for today:-
  • HDB resale prices dropped for the sixth consecutive month in July, data compiled by the Singapore Real Estate Exchange (SRX) shows.
  • Vallianz Holdings, the provider of offshore support vessels and integrated marine solutions to the oil and gas industry, today reported a doubling of net profit to US$5.8 million for the second quarter ended 30 June 2014 (2Q2014) from US$2.8 million in 2Q2013.
  • TEE International, the engineering and real estate group, said it won a total of $60 million worth of contracts to carry out mechanical and electrical works for the The Parisian Macao, located at the Cotai Strip in Macau.
  • Singapore Airlines Ltd.’s budget carrier Scoot doesn’t want to use the city’s new airport terminal and regards the $1.28 billion facility as a “folly”.

Share prices opened lower today with the Straits Times Index down 6.32 points to 3,322.58. Asian stocks dropped, following a sharp fall on Wall Street over fears of a market correction and concerns the conflict in Ukraine could escalate. The open was marked at 3322.58 and the close was marked at 3320.23.

Important Factor for today:-
  • SINGAPORE’S life insurance industry managed to sustain its growth for the first six months of this year.
  • Yangzijiang Shipbuilding reported a 52 per cent jump in net profit for the second quarter ended June 30 to 1.24 billion yuan, despite a 3 per cent drop in revenue to 4.27 billion yuan after delivering fewer vessels during the period.
  • SINGAPORE Post Limited said its net profit for the fiscal first quarter ended June 30, 2014 rose 5.1 per cent to S$39.24 million. Revenue increased 4.8 per cent to S$210.91 million, as growth in e-commerce related activities continued to offset declines in the traditional postal business
  • STAR HUB has posted a 6.3 per cent decrease in net profit to S$94.3 million for the second quarter ended June 30.
  • HG Metal Manufacturing recorded a net loss after tax of $13.3 million in the quarter ended 30 June 2014 (2Q2014), compared to a profit of $0.7 million in 2Q2013 due to one-time provisions for inventories, doubtful debts and asset impairment on disposal of factory assets.

Market Review for KLCI:
Share prices opened lower today with KLCI down 2.61 to 1872.55. The situation in the US is not really confirmed. The IMF lowering its growth forecast as well as indication that interest rate hikes will be deferred to 2015 is not positive news. The close was observed at 1876.69 .The prices are below 20 days EMA and little above the 50 days EMA.

Economic Factors:
  • The Malaysian equities market recorded a whopping RM13bil in net outflows of foreign portfolio funds over a 15-month period, and industry experts remain divided as to whether this negative trend will continue.
  • Malaysian banks with Indonesian subsidiaries could face more hurdles in expanding their businesses when a law to cap foreign ownership to 40% likely comes on stream between now and October.
  • United Plantations fell 28 sen to RM28.30 and PPB Group fell 26 sen to RM14.74 while KKL Kepong was down 20 sen to RM23.52.
  • Gamuda has proposed to acquire the entire equity interest in Salak Land Sdn Bhd, which is owned by the Tan family of Mahajaya Bhd fame.

Share prices opened higher today with the STI up 9.16 points to 3,326.91. Hong Kong stocks rose 0.32 per cent today morning, after a positive lead from Wall Street and in anticipation of the release of HSBC's July index of manufacturing activity in China. Close of the day was marked at 3327.05 .The high was marked at 3332.68, seems that the market tried to recover the last two days downfall.

  • Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp, Southeast Asia’s second-largest lender, posted a larger-than-estimated 54% increase in second-quarter profit on loan growth and higher income from fee-generating businesses.

Important Factor for today:-
  • Asian shares, as concerns over geopolitical tensions and Argentina's debt default eclipsed US economic data that argued against an earlier start to the Federal Reserve's rate-tightening cycle.

  • Singapore will introduce a minimum price for main board shares and reduce the lot size for transactions after a slump in the stocks of three commodity companies erased US$6.9 billion ($8.6 billion) in market value over three days in October.
  • Singapore will implement wide-scale reforms to its equity market rules following a penny-stock scandal last year, its central bank and stock exchange announced on Friday.
